WVOV – Danville’s Voice of Victory – has a storied history. The station was
originally built in August 1959. It signed on as WDTI – Where Danville
Tunes In. It was sold several years later and the call letters were changed
to WYPR – Young People’s Radio. It was an immensely popular station in the
Danville area while operating under these call letters. People still talk
about listening to it during that period of its history.
In the early 1980’s the station was sold again and the call letters became
WVOV – The Voice of Virginia. The station was sold again shortly thereafter,
though the call letters remained the same. The format was Top 40, but the
station’s popularity continued to drop.
On Christmas Day, 1986 the station’s owners changed the format to
Christian. Some of the nation’s top preaching/teaching programs began to
air daily. The music was light inspirational. The station began to attract
a loyal and dedicated audience, but the revenues were not enough to keep the
station afloat.
In September 1987, the station was sold to its current owners. The format
was changed to Southern Gospel. The station retained the great preaching
and teaching that was already airing. Additionally, several local pastors
began to air weekly on the station. The station began to bring the top
Southern Gospel artists into the area for concerts. A Southern Gospel
supper club – The Silver Trumpet – was started to give listeners a chance to
enjoy gospel music in new ways.
Today, the station continues to air the best in Southern Gospel and
Bluegrass music. It continues to broadcast some of the best teaching and
preaching available to radio. The station now broadcasts its programming
worldwide via the Internet. WVOV is available twenty-four hours, seven days
a week locally and online.
